Okay I probably spend more time eating out in the summer, then I probably should...but when I run across a dish that I like, I hope you enjoy it as well. So Dai Tung is a family favourite and I've eaten there countless times, as I grew up in the Mount Pleasant area of Vancouver. Tonight we had the Peking Spare Ribs which are tender fried pork chops glistening red with sweet and sour, Yee Mein with mushrooms, some Water Spinach Choi with Chillies which was very well done and flavourful, and the dish that inspires me to review today. Prawns with candied walnuts and a creamy mayo sauce.
So first things first, the plates of food at Dai Tung are big! Normally we would order chilli crab or creamy lobster, but since this was the third time eating out today, wasn't feeling fighting shells for the tasty bits. Which brings me to the Prawn Dish. These flash fried crustaceans were friggin huge! This yummy dish featured a mound of prawns battered and fried, with a good amount of crunchy candies walnuts, caressed with a silky creamy mayoey sauce that brought it all together.
Nice that the prawns were fully shelled and cleaned, so all you had to do was chomp on the ample meat and creamy sauce.
It's reminiscent of the local Japanese dish Ebi Mayo, but executed with a bit more clean presentation. Okay, I'm sure this dish wasn't callorie deficient, but it's richness was enjoyable, and I guess I'll have to run it off! -

I haven't been here in many years but we decided to come for a family dinner recently. We had the salted baked chicken which seems to be a specialty dish there and it was pretty flavourful without being overly salty. We also had a seafood dish with snow peas and candied walnuts, peppercorn beef cubes with veggies and an eggplant hot pot dish with scallops and egg tofu. The dishes were a good size and the flavours were there. The only thing was that the peppercorn beef dish had too many veggies and the eggplant hot pot had a LOT of garlic. Like whole cloves which I don't think is normal?

Terrible service. They obviously don't understand what vegetarian means, when even their supposed Buddhist feast dish has chicken broth. When asked if they can do it without, they said it wouldn't taste good and insisted they wouldn't. The waiters refuse to accommodate any dietary needs, so avoid this place like a plague if you've got allergies. Really gone downhill. No wonder there is no more dinner rush and it's dead.

It wasn't the best chinese food in town but it's quite decent for the price you pay. I'm giving it 3 stars because the service. We got there on a weekend for dimsum and didn't have to wait at all. But when we wanted to order, it was super hard to get the servers attention despite they weren't that busy. And when we did, the waitress couldn't speak English and pointed to another waitress. Not sure how they got hired!?

Food is decent, not cheap but portion big. Repeat: Probably. Service so so . Salted chicken is the best.
